5 Tips to Make Your Home More Secure Before Children Go to School

1. Your current lock condition

At first, you should look over whether the existing locks are secure enough. If not, then we suggest you to replace a poorly functioning or a broken lock with a new and decent one.

You should start replacing your locks few weeks before school starts. Operating with the new lock could take some time, and children may need to practice it. That way you can be sure that your children know how to deal with the lock, and will not be in trouble while staying home alone.

2. Do you know where your keys are, and with who?

Do you know exactly who has you keys, and how many you have them at all? Lost keys are security risk. For a key finder, it is really easy to enter your home. You should remember that the insurance will not cover the damages, which are caused by the use of keys. Unfortunately, the damages caused by the use of stolen keys, also.

In case of lost keys, you do not have to replace your lock immediately. Your current lock can also be rekeyed to the new keys. We recommend you to use a professional locksmiths help.

However, it is wise to buy a new lock cylinder when the old one is worn-out, or has too low security level.

If you need some extra keys, you should choose the key duplicating workshop really carefully. Obtain the keys from where they are duplicated with the highest quality. Poorly made keys can shorten your locks lifetime.

3. Teach your children how to use their keys

If additional keys are made, teach your children how to use them. We suggest that you fasten the keys onto keychain. Otherwise, it can easily be lost. It is also suitable to use a neck strap. The keys are securely around the neck and will not be lost.

If your children do not want to use the neck strap, you can find help from a key cord. In this case, the key clips on to children's clothes or school bag.

However, we think that the keys should be close to the children, rather than attached to the school bag. It may happen that children leave their bags unattended, and any stranger has an easy way to steal the keys.

If carrying the keys is not optional, the key holder is also one of the alternatives. It makes the key bundle more noticeable. In such a case, dropped or lost keys are more likely to be found.

4. Your child can also increase home security

A simple way to increase the security is to install a door-viewer, and to teach your children how to use it. You should instruct your children to who they are allowed to open the door, and how to react, when a stranger will not leave the door. In case of uninvited guest, explain to your children to whom they should call and from which neighbours they can get help.

A door chain provides some extra security. Door chain with the unlock function is easy to manage. Children can keep the door in chain while parents are not at home. However, parents are able to open the door from outside. Between the open door, they can unlock the chain with a small key.

Teach your children how to use home security systems, so that they form a connected whole.

If you have a local security system, you should consider the possibility of connecting it to a security company. There are several favourable home packages that are designed for homes.

This solution scares away burglars, who are searching for an easy catch, and who are not thoroughly prepared. In case on stolen keys, the security company offers you some extra protection.

Alarm code can be called as a key. You need to keep it under control. The code should be memorable and easy to understand, but not easily predictable regarding Alabaster Locksmith. The use of alarm should be taught to the children few weeks before the school starts. That way you can avoid additional costs caused by false alarms.

5. Insurance for your home

Insurance is an important component of creating a secure home. In addition, insurance protects your home from the damages caused by fire, water and lightning. A decent lock will keep away uninvited friends, but not accidents.

In general, theft losses are significantly lower than damages caused by water and fire.

Teach your children how to use the domestic electrical appliances and fire extinguishing equipment. Be sure that your home fire extinguishers are calibrated, and you have a safety blanket in your kitchen. Instruct your children how to behave in case of fire, and how to extinguish fire. In addition, check the insurance terms. To avoid problems with insurance disbursement, you have to be sure that your extinguishers are calibrated and are not outdated.
